On Saturday, August 27,
2011 preparations were made for the possibility of flooding on the parish property due to
Hurricane Irene. By 3:30am evacuations were being made on W. Grand Ave as the river began to flood the neighborhood at a surprisingly rapid rate. Further
preparations were made to safeguard the Church but by 5:00am in was necessary to abandon any work and return to the rectory for
safety. By 8am flood waters began to enter the Church Hall the flood water reached the windows, doors and
ventilations openings. The waters continued to rise through the morning flooding the Hall with
approximately 9 feet of water. When the water receded on Monday we began pumping the water from the Hall. The pumping continued until Tuesday evening at 10pm when the last of the water was removed. The removal and clean up began on Thursday with some 20 parishioners and neighbors and continued until Saturday. Once the clean up, inspection and
disinfecting is complete, we will be able to contract with the proper professionals to rebuild the hall. Until then, your patience is greatly appreciated as we work through this difficult time together.

APPROACHING CONFESSION
Six of our Sunday School students; Matthew Mallick, Maxwell Backaletz, Dmitri Lee, Karenna Breslow and Emma & Abigail Tamburello approached the Sacrament of Confession for the first time. Their teacher, Sophia Alexander-Himlyn had been instructing them throughout the year .
On Sunday, April 25, 2010, the students attended Liturgy with their teacher and were the first to approach the Chalice for communion.

EXPRESSING THEIR FAITH
On a recent Saturday morning, members of our Sunday School program arrived at Church at 8:45am to travel to the Harlem section of New York City to help with a clean-up project at a house of charity run by the Orthodox Church. In addition, the youth carried with them $150.00 which they had collected during Lent to offer as a gift. What is most amazing is that this project was the response from the students from their heart and soul. This is the fruit of prayer, tradition and education in the Orthodox Christian Faith! This is the Faith that saves us! Look in the May edition of the Daylight for more on this event along with some pictures.

Scouting Sunday

On Sunday February 15th, 12 of our
youth and 4 adult Scouts attended Liturgy. The Medal
of St. George was awarded to Vladimir Lee and the Chi Rho
was awarded to Benjamin Bakaletz. A proud moment
for the Scouts and their leaders of our parish!

Our first annual St. John's Rahway Marathon was a success! We collectively completed the 26-mile Marathon and then our families enjoyed a time of fun, food, football, and fellowship. If anyone still needs to turn in pledges, please see Larissa Lee. So far, we have collected over $200s for the Sunday School.

The Weeping Icon of Saint Anna Visits Area
The Myrrh-Streaming Icon of Saint Anna of the the
Russian Orthodox Church of Our Lady the Joy of All Who
Sorrow, Philadelphia, PA, was received at our
Deanery's Mother Church, St. John the Baptist Orthodox
Church, Perth Amboy, on Wednesday, February 15th.
An Akathist to Sts. Joachim & Anne was celebrated
and Archimandrite Afanasy, the caretaker of the Icon,
spoke briefly. All in attendance had the
opportunity to venerate the Icon, and receive some of
the oil.
On the following morning, February 16th,
9:00am, the Icon was made available for veneration
and prayers, at our church
here in Rahway.

Bishop Nikolai of Alaska and the Sitka Mother of God Icon visited our sister parish in Perth Amboy on the Feast of Pokrov. On the following Sunday, this copy of the Sitka Icon was presented in our Temple for the faithful to venerate.
